HBCU Canvas 1868&Park

The event’s theme was inspired by the iconic "106 & Park" show, a popular hip hop and R&B countdown music video show. It showcased celebrity interviews, live performances, and the top 10 music videos of the week requested by viewers.

HBCU Canvas took the inspiration and incorporated into the attire, musical performances, and overall vibe.

Demp Bennett, HBCU Canvas member, highlighted the inclusive nature of the event, "The overall vibe was great," Demp noted. "People coming in could sense how inviting the space was, from the music to the food. It was a space for curiosity and community." During the event, HBCU Canvas gave emerging artists and creatives the opportunity to showcase their talent. Performing artists included upcoming rappers, a dance performance from Hampton University’s Caribbean dance team: Crossfyah, and a saxophone performance by Hampton University student, Trajan Baker.

Honeyrose Smith details the performances as a “special moment; witnessing several black artists being appreciated and lifted up in a supportive space. It was truly endearing."

Jada Auston, reflecting on the artistic performances, shared, "My favorite was the saxophonist Trajan. His performance was amazing, and it showcased the diverse talent present at the event." HBCU Canvas member, Jayona Dorsey, emphasized the generosity of attendees who donated art supplies for entry. “Various art supplies were generously donated, fostering creativity and providing resources for aspiring artists,” Jayona observed. “Including paints, brushes, canvases, sketchbooks, markers, and more. These contributions helped foster creativity and provided resources for aspiring artists to explore their craft.” Half of the art supplies are being donated to a local hospital and the latter, donated to local schools for back to school.
